Shawn started joining casual "hack" circles during his freshman year at Ashland
High School, but was completely unaware of the sport of footbag until a surprise
visit from local freestyler, Forest Schrodt, introduced him to the world of freestyle
footbag. Forest set him up with Tevas and told him about footbag.org ; with footbag.org as a guide, Shawn began to take "hacking" more seriously, learning the basics and attending Worlds 2002 that summer in San Fransisco.  It was there that he realized the necessity of replacing his beloved Tevas with the more widely used Rod Lavers.  After an awkward adjustment, he stepped up his game, learning more difficult moves and kicking with Forest on occasion. However, the lack of freestylers in
Southern Oregon made it difficult for Shawn to stay interested in the sport,
and after a year or two of kicking primarily on his own, he took a long
break from the game. Only after moving to Portland, Oregon to attend PSU
did he reenter the footbag scene.  Now, as a member of Sole Purpose, Shawn
has once again found joy in pushing his limits and improving his game.
